THE ULTIMATE GUIDE FOR CHOOSING THE IDEAL LAWN
October is the prime time for putting in a new lawn, especially before temperatures start soaring.
But what if you’re starting from scratch, know next to nothing about lawns and aren’t sure which variety to choose?
Which lawn type is most suitable for you and your family? Which type will grow best in your climate? What if I don’t have a lot of time to maintain it?
These are all very important questions and we encourage you, as your first step, to consider the following before picking the cheapest variety on the market or the one your neighbour has:
- Do you have any pets or children who will frequently use the lawn?
- Does anyone in your family have allergies to grass?
- How much or little sun exposure does your yard get?
- What is the rain situation like at your place?
- Are you able to water it regularly?
- How much time do you want to spend maintaining it?
- How much are you willing to spend, including chemicals and nutrients?
- What type of soil do you have?
Once you know the answers to these, you’re ready to discover the ideal lawn for your home Take a look below at our guide to the most popular lawn varieties on the Australian market to help you decide:
Soft Leaf Buffalo Grass
Fast growing and repairing, ideal for kids and pets, flexible sun requirements.
This variety is hands-down a crowd favourite because it ticks so many important boxes for homeowners. It is hardy throughout drought seasons, retains colour even during the winter and has excellent resistance to pests and diseases. Kids and pets will love it for its soft touch and its ability to repair easily with few dead spots in sight.
Unsure of your yard’s sun exposure? Not to worry, Buffalo can tolerate anything from shady to full-sun. Did we also mention it’s easy on your wallet? Little to no chemicals are required to maintain this stunning lawn variety.
The only downside to Buffalo grass is even though it can withstand dry climates, it looks its best with at least 2-3 deep soakings per week. If you have a rainwater tank system, however, this may be the lawn for you!
It’s also a time-hungry lawn – requiring regular mowing, trimming and fertilising to keep it looking fresh.
Drought resistant, suitable for coastal and pool areas with high salt tolerance.
If you’re from a hot climate, Zoysia may be the lawn covering you’re looking for. Its brilliant green foliage can withstand heat and droughts and even has a hidden secret – it’s highly salt resistant making it perfect for surrounding pools or at coastal locations.
Another variety which pairs well with pets and children, the soft Zoysia variety can handle high levels of foot traffic as well as general wear and tear. As an added bonus, newer varieties are low allergenic and cause little to no irritation.
If you have a shady backyard, the Zoysia is for you as it only requires minimal sun exposure. A slow grower, means if you don’t have all the time in the world to maintain it, Zoysia won’t overtake growth in other areas of your yard too quickly. The only downside there is if it does experience harsh damage, due to its slow growth, it will take a little while to get back to its full potential.
Full sun, soft, naturally pest resistant.
Another heat-hardy variety, the dense foliage of a Bermuda lawn flourishes in full sun with decent drainage and minimal water. Bermuda also suits coastal areas or pool owners due to its high salt tolerance. It is more sensitive to the cold than the previously mentioned Zoysia grass.
This fast grower can self-repair against the roughest of kids and the most energetic of pets.
Unfortunately this variety is a perennial warm-season grass, so it won’t look the same throughout the year – most actively growing from late spring through to the hot summer months. Bermuda is a high maintenance variety requiring nutrient supplements so be prepared to work hard and feed it well to keep this lawn looking fresh as a daisy.
Rapid repairing properties with low chemical and water use.
The most affordable lawn type on the market – Kikuyu – is capable of growing in a wide range of soil types and provides hardy, reliable coverage under heavy foot traffic. This fast grower means it can repair itself quickly however this can lead to invasive growth into garden beds and other areas. Retaining its colour well into the Winter months, Kikuyu grass provides a lush, soft cover while remaining highly water efficient.
Drought and frost resistant, low maintenance and durable structure.
If you don’t have all the time in the world to fuss over your lawn but still want something ornate, great for children and pets while remaining soft underfoot, Fescue Grass may be for you. Fescue Grasses are highly versatile, able to withstand droughts and mild frosty conditions. Requiring low water and low nutrients this undemanding variety prefers minimal sun while still tolerating high salt concentrations. For an all-round achiever, choose Fescue Grass.
Retains colour during winter, drought and salt tolerant with weed resistance.
A solid middle-ground choice, Couch grass is affordable, thrives in a range of sun exposures and doesn’t need too much water to stay lucious and green. Although it is high maintenance, due to it’s thatched layering, you won’t have to spend time weeding so long as it’s the variety with Ryegrass, which naturally repels weeds. Ideal for high traffic areas and durable by design, Couch grass is however susceptible to pests so make sure you are prepared to manage that accordingly.
